Subtracting Fractions

Fraction number is a number which is written in the form of p / q. Here 'p' and 'q' both are real numbers. Just like simple number forms we can perform different mathematical operations on fraction number. Basic mathematical operations are addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Let us see how to subtract fractions.

Basically in the process of Subtracting Fractions we have two conditions, when denominators are same and when denominators are different. Basically in fraction number 'p' is called as numerator and 'q' is called as denominator. Here 'q' cannot be zero.

Condition 1:  If in two fraction numbers, denominators are same then we can simply subtract fraction from other fraction number. Assume that we have two fraction numbers 5 /6 and 1 / 6. Here both fraction numbers have same denominator so we can simply subtract them. We will subtract the second numerator from the first numerator and denominator will be same.
5 / 6 – 1 / 6 = 4 / 6
Now we can simplify the fraction number as 4 / 6 = 2 / 3.

Condition 2:  In this condition both fraction numbers have different denominators. Now we have to find the common
denominator. For this we will find the least common multiple of both denominators. Assume that we have to subtract 1 / 3 from 1 / 2. Here both denominators are different. So we will find the least common multiple of 2 and 3 which is 6. Now we will multiply and divide both fraction numbers by the least common multiple like:

(1*6 / 2*6) – (1*6 / 3*6),

Now we will simplify this fraction number.

3 / 6 – 2 /6,

Now both denominators are same so we will subtract it.

3 / 6 – 2 / 6 = 1 / 6.
