# Number Sense

While talking about Number system, we say that the numbers have different bases, with the help of which different number system are formed. Now if we look at the Binary Number System, we say that it only consist of two numbers, so we call them Binary Numbers. The numbers 0 and 1, used in the number system explains all the numbers and their operations. Similarly we always work on the decimal number system , which means base 10 and the  numbers  0, 1, 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6, 7, 8, 9  are in all 10 numbers used to farm any number in the number system.  The term Number Sense means to understand the concept of working with numbers. Number sense includes all the operations which include mathematical and logical working on the numbers.  When we talk about number sense, it says the concept of working and use of numbers at different operations, relations and comparison of the different types of numbers. We have different types of numbers and they have their own properties.  Some of the common types of numbers are:
Natural numbers
Whole Numbers
Integers (both positive and negative)
Fraction Numbers
Rational numbers
Irrational numbers
Real Numbers
Different numbers are accompanied with different set of properties.
As we talk about positive and negative numbers, we say that the positive and negative numbers combine together to form Integers.  All Integers have successors and predecessors, which we can get by adding 1 and by subtracting 1 from the given integer number. But on another hand, if we look at Natural Numbers, we say that all the Natural Numbers have successors and the predecessor but there exist a natural number 1, which does not have a predecessor.
If we search for the smallest natural number, we get 1, but on another hand we cannot find the smallest integer number.
Number sense helps to increase the understanding and reasoning of the learners. As we start with the concept of counting, we say that at earlier stage, when the kids are learning to count and recognize the numbers, throwing dice and speaking the number of dots appearing on the dice, will surely help the children to understand the concept of recognizing the pattern of appearance of the number on the dice. Similarly they start learning the numbers and develop their number sense by counting the number of eyes, nose, hands, fingers and other parts of their body, which will develop the number sense in the beginners.
Moving further, they learn the sense of comparison of numbers so that they are able to compare which number is bigger and which is smaller. So the concept of greater and smaller numbers makes them the appearance of numbers on the scale clear and thus they are able to arrange the numbers in ascending and descending order.
At next stage of development of number sense in kids, students will learn different mathematical operations to be performed on different numbers and to get the desired results.
