How to Round Numbers?

Numbers can be in form of Whole Numbers or decimal numbers. If we look at set of whole numbers, we can round them to nearest tens, hundreds, thousand etc. Here we are going to learn about How To Round Numbers.

We first look at method of rounding the given number to nearest tens. For this we simply need to look at the digit at ones place. We will replace the digit at ones place with 0. Another thing we need to remember is to check if digit at ones place is less than 5 or not. If it is greater than or equal to 5, then we will simply add 10 to given number.

It will be more clear with following examples :

238 = 230 + 10 = 240, as the digit at ones place is 8, which is greater than 5.

If number is 542, here digit at ones place is 2 so round of to tens of given number will be = 540.

Now we will look at how to convert the given number to nearest hundreds. For this we need to check if last two digits of given number is less than 50, then last two digits will be simply replaced by 00. On other hand if last two digits are greater than or equals to 50, then last two digits will be 00 and we add 100 to new number. For example :

If number is 4763, here last two digits are 63, so number will be rounded off as follows : 4700 + 100 = 4800.

If number is 6532, here last two digits are 32, which are less than 50, so number will be rounded to 6500.
