How to Multiply Whole Numbers?

       
           

When we talk about numbers and their family, we say that Natural Numbers are counting numbers and Whole Numbers are measuring numbers. To solve word problems related to natural and whole numbers, we need to perform mathematical operations on numbers and get result of these operations. Now we will learn how to multiply whole numbers.

There are certain Properties of Multiplication of whole numbers which help us to make multiplication process of whole numbers easy and fast. They are as follows:

1. Any whole number multiplied by number zero, results to zero. Thus we say that if we have whole number 'n', then n * 0 = 0. This property of multiplication is called power of zero.

2. Any whole number multiplied to a number 1, will give same number as a result. So we express it as n * 1 = n. We call this property of multiplication as multiplication identity.

3. Commutative property of multiplication holds true for whole numbers, which means that if two numbers 'a' and 'b' are multiplied, then we say that a * b = b * a.

4. Associative property of multiplication holds true for whole numbers, which means that if two numbers a, b and c are multiplied, then we say that (a * b) * c = a * (b * c).

5. Closure property of multiplication holds true for whole numbers, which means that if two numbers 'a' and 'b' are multiplied, then we say that a * b is also a whole number.

6. We must remember that for every whole number 'a', we have multiplicative inverse 1 / a, such that product of a and 1 / a is always 1.
