Any number which can be written in the form of numerator / denominator is called as fraction number. Different mathematical and logical operations can be performed on fraction numbers. Here we will learn about adding fractions

To add fractions, different rules are to be followed. Here are some of them:

1. If we are adding fraction to number 0, then number remains same. So we say that a / b + 0 = a/b.

2. On other hand, we must also remember that if fraction number is added to its additive inverse, then number becomes 0. It can be expressed as follows: If fraction number is a / b, then its additive inverse will be (- a/b). On adding we get:

a/b + (–a/b) = 0.

3. On Adding Fractions with same denominator, we observe that denominator remains same and numerators are added. So we say that a / b + c / b can be written as follows: (a + c) / b.

4. Sometimes we come across pair of fraction numbers, where numerators and denominators both are different digits. In such cases, we will simply convert the fraction numbers in their equivalent forms such that denominators of two fractions becomes same. For this we will take LCM of two denominators.

Now we will try to solve given pair of fraction numbers: ¾ + 2/5.

Here LCM of denominators (4 and 5) is 20. So two fraction numbers can be written as follows: (3 * 5 + 2 * 4) / 20 = (15 + 8) / 20 = 23 / 20.
