# 3 Digit Subtraction

3 digit subtraction, is a process in which two numbers having 3 digits each are subtracted from each other by taking one column at a time. The process of subtraction starts from the one's digit column and we borrowing process can be carried out if needed.
Here we are going to learn how to subtract two 3 digit numbers or to do 3 digit subtraction.

1.       First of all in the 3 digit subtraction, you need to place the two 3 digit numbers one over the other such that their hundred’s are over hundred, ten’s over the ten’s of the other and so on. You must be sure that the higher 3 digit number should be written at the top and smaller one should be written at beneath it.
Just like this: Let the two numbers are 345 and 782?

2.       Now once you have gone through the first step in the 3 digit subtraction, you need to start subtracting the digits from one’s place column and just write answer under the line in one’s place column. As we can see: 2-5 = ?, so we will borrow one from the ten’s place of the number 782, like it makes the upper digit larger than the lower one. Now we can subtract 12 – 5 = 7.

3.       Now subtract the numbers in ten’s place column, as ten’s place number of the upper number is now 7 so, 7 – 4 = 3. Place the answer under the line at  ten’s place column.

4.       Now in the last step of the 3 digit subtraction, you need to subtract the numbers at last hundred’s place column ( 7 – 3 = 4) and then just write the answer at  beneath the line in the hundred’s place column.
